Located within the core of the estate, Icewell Terrace is situated on top of the original ice well. In the days of Mr. du Pont, garden staff would go out to the various ponds on property and cut blocks of ice, bring them back, and store them in the ice well. Estate lore says that the du Pont family would host events on the Icewell Terrace in summer as the ice below evaporated and was an early form of air conditioning! The Terrace is situated under majestic, tall trees with a direct view of the Conservatory and the back of the mansion.
